B38.

I saw the discussions on bold/italic and didn't pay much attention until I ran into this today, so I just went and re-read them. They really didn't provide enough information for me to know whether this is a bug or design or what.

I want bold/italic for selected text in MMD to be as smart as it is in Word/Pages/etc., which is to say if I highlight text and Cmd-B, it's bolded, and if I do Cmd-B again, it's unbolded. That's not happening. And what is happening gets a little weirder as the Cmd-B's pile up.

I highlighted a paragraph (four complete screen lines, one "real" line). I used Shift-DownArrow to do the highlighting, so the entire last line is highlighted.
I then hit Cmd-B. I get two asterisks at the beginning and ending of the paragraph. Interestingly, the selection now includes the first of the two closing asterisks, but neither of the starting ones.
I hit Cmd-B again. I get two more asterisks at the beginning of the selection but none at the end. But the ending selection has moved again, this time backwards — it no longer includes the first asterisk, but it doesn't include the closing period on the paragraph, either.
A third Cmd-B is even weirder — two more asterisks at beginning, but the ending now has one additional asterisk before the period, and the selection has moved to the left two more characters, so now has excluded the last character before the period.

In short, each Cmd-B gives two additional opening asterisks every time, neither of which are included in the selection.
At the end, the text looks successively like this (bar | indicating where the selection ends).

Before first Cmd-B easier.|

After first Cmd-B easier.*|*

After second Cmd-B easier|.**

After third Cmd-B easie|r*.**

Italic (Cmd-I) does the same thing.

I just uploaded a video showing this. It gets weirder the further it goes, so I went to five (six?) in the video.

That's another instance of the UTF-8 multibyte issue. Fixed for next release.
