Feature Request: Shortcut for formatting selected text as a blockquote

If I have text selected, I'd like to be able to "overwrite" this text with a ">" character, or with ">>". Ideally, this would prepend each line with this character and a space, and perhaps we could also have a couple of space characters added to the end of each line. This would allow us to easily copy and paste text into our documents and format everything nicely as Markdown-compliant blockquotes.

It might also be nice to have a keyboard shortcut to increase or decrease the quote level.

The usual behavior when typing a key with a selected range is to replace the selected range of characters with the key pressed. Changing this behavior needs to be done only in circumstances that would be clear to all (most?) users. I think this proposal would confuse most people.

You can already paste from the clipboard as a block quote, which will prepend lines with ">". For now, I think this is the workflow that makes the most sense. If you already have text in a document, you can cut and repaste as a block quote.

You can already increase and decrease quote levels (shift left/shift right).
