export file naming
When I export a document, might it be possible (nay, desirable) to preserve the name of the current document, with the appropriate extension, rather than picking it up from the content? (Or have I missed something obvious?)

You can change this setting however you like. Some prefer that the title metadata or fist line be used, others don't.
That's what the preferences are for -- to allow you to choose the behavior you prefer. Simply uncheck the box for "better filenames."
