MMDC 2.6.5 crashes on start
Dear Fletcher,
after the update to version 2.6.5, it won’t start. It crashes everytime. It happens when I try to open any file or when I try to open MMDC itself.
I updated from 2.6.4. I’m using OS X 10.9.1. I tried restarting, but it didn’t help. I attached the crash report as txt-file.
Thanks a lot,
Marko

P.S.: I also tried deleting and re-downloading the app, and deleting the preferences. Didn’t help either.

A couple of people have reported this problem, but I can't replicate it.
Can you send me a copy of your preferences file? Be sure that you send
the correct one:

Thanks!!

I am having the same problem.
My preferences file is attached here.
Thanks.

Thanks for sending prefs. That still didn't allow me to replicate the issue.
The problem seems to occur when adjusting the size of the document window, or at least the text editor pane. It might be related to the synchronized scrolling feature, which is enabled when the editing pane and preview pane are both visible, and the proper key is held down.
Would you mind trying the following?
Try creating a new user account and running Composer there. Do not run any other utilities or login items.
If that fixes the problem, quit all running programs/menu bar items/etc. in your main account and try running Composer again there. See if you can figure out the conflicting program.
If you have an older version of Composer, try turning off "Preferences->Preview->Display Preview when new window is opened". Then try the new version again (as long as both are the non-sandboxed copy, they share the same preferences).
Let me know if that accomplishes anything....
Thanks!

FYI -- I added a link to download the previous version of the non-sandboxed version of Composer to the download page:
http://multimarkdown.com/download/
It does require a version of the receipt from 2.6.4 or older...

I don’t have the time right now. I will try tomorrow.
But what I can say now is that I already did have Preferences->Preview->Display Preview when new window is opened" turned off already.

Sorry for double-posting all the time.
I just did have the time. I tried creating a new user account. MMDC won’t start and I don’t even get a crash report. It just won’t start.

I’m really sorry for triple-posting now.
I cannot download the old version. I’m getting an Access Denied error.

Permissions should be fixed. Sorry about that. I switched from Droplr
to Amazon S3 and need a better workflow.
One issue will be that the website version needs the receipt from the
MAS version with the same or *older* version number. So 2.6.4 can't use
a 2.6.5 (MAS) receipt. If you don't delete it (or keep a copy), the
receipt in ~/Library/Application Support/MultiMarkdown Composer is left
alone so it should be good for quite a while. I'm trying to work out a
different approach for that.

My update crashes also. It doesn't matter if I try to open an existing file or create a new one. It crashes. So I try to delete the latest version again and to copy the 2.6.4 version from my Mac-Book. But that doesn't work either. How can I install the latest version until you have fixed this nasty bug?
Support Staff 12 Posted by Fletcher on 24 Jan, 2014 09:13 PM
Update, with a theory...
I think that the issue relates to international handling of numbers. In the US, we use "1,000,000" and "3.14". In other languages/countries, one might use "1.000.000" or "3,14", for example.
So far, everyone experiencing this problem so far has not used the American system.
Numbers where this matters are in two main places --- the typewriter mode height (e.g. "0.5" (US) means "50%" of the screen height. The other main place is line height (my default is "1.7" (US).
I made an update in 2.6.5 that was supposed to improve this (there were issues where the OS would sometimes change "1.5" to "1,5" and but not back again in non-US systems. I tried to make this more consistent.
Several people have found that one or more of the following fixed the problem for them:
http://support.multimarkdown.com/kb/troubleshooting/location-for-co...
See #1 above. Seriously, delete BOTH preference files. You have to delete both.
It seems that Composer will work at this point for most people.
Some people have reported that switching to English/US localization works. Some even report switching back to their native system works after that. I think what actually did it was deleting the preferences.
If you have customized any of the stylesheets, I recommend that you move those to your desktop as well. When you restart Composer, switch to the "Default" theme, and then back to whatever you like. But get it working before you use a custom theme again.
Did you see the part where I told you to delete BOTH sets of preferences? ;)
The tricky thing is that I can't seem to replicate this issue on my machine. I've switched numbering systems. I've intentionally typed the "wrong" punctuation into the preferences. None of it has caused the crash to recur.
I'm working on trying to improve this, but it's hard since I can't replicate the exact problem and it all works fine for me.
If you're experiencing a crash in Composer, you can verify it's the same issue by looking at the crash report for something like the following repeated over and over in the right column:
If you're experiencing this Crash and use US style numbers, then that may shoot a hole in my theory. In that case, please take a screenshot of the relevant "Language and Region" preferences in System Preferences and send it to me.
In the meantime, you can download 2.6.4 (non-sandboxed) from the web site:
http://multimarkdown.com/download/
To run this you need an older receipt installed. If you've never run the non-sandboxed version before, you'll have to wait for the next release.
Thanks!
Fletcher
PS> This would be so much easier if everywhere else just used "normal" numbers like the US.... ;)

I have uploaded a new test build, 2.6.6:
https://files.fletcherpenney.net.s3.amazonaws.com/MultiMarkdown%20C...
This should fix the issue related to non-US systems.
This copy was built on Mavericks, and apparently there's some issue with Xcode/Mavericks and icons. So the icons looks "wonky." So you'll have to ignore that, but I think this build should work if you're currently having trouble.

After deleting preferences it works.
Non US system as well.
Support Staff 16 Posted by Fletcher on 25 Jan, 2014 05:07 PM
Great!
I'll upload new releases to the web site and MAS (2.6.7)
We'll see what happens.

Support Staff 17 Posted by Fletcher on 25 Jan, 2014 05:23 PM
2.6.7 is available for download, and has been uploaded to the MAS. You might have to reboot, and then delete the preferences. There seems to be a problem with 10.9.1 (maybe 10.9 as well) that prevents your preferences from actually being deleted when you delete the file. Be sure to delete both the MAS and non-sandboxed preferences.
See above for details on that.

Works for me, even without reboot and deleting preferences.
Thanks a lot!

Hi,
sorry to say that I am stuck with MultiMarkdown Composer refusing to start.
I tried the various strategies you suggest here -- including rebooting and deleting the various versions of preference files hidden in the undergrowth of the operating system.
Unfortunately, I still cannot start MMC; it does not even throw up an error message. This is a bit awkward if one uses MMC as a production system for writing...
Can someone guide me to the relevant error messages in Console to find out what is wrong? To me (a mere user) this is all gobbledigook...
Thanks,
Andreas

Since I was one of those with the 2.6.5 problem: 2.6.7 non-sandboxed works for me now! (preferences deleted)
Many thanks :)

Hi,
here are now the error messages I get in Console when trying to start MMC:
26.01.14 19:47:51,507 MultiMarkdown Composer[1171]: open on /Users/andreasbusch/Library/Application Support/MultiMarkdown Composer/receipt: File exists
26.01.14 19:47:51,521 MultiMarkdown Composer[1171]: failed receipt validation

26.01.14 19:47:51,597 storeagent[416]: Unsigned app (/Applications/MultiMarkdown Composer.app).
Any help? What does "failed receipt validation" mean - and how can I fix it? And how can I make an "unsigned app" start?
Thanks for any help!
Andreas
Support Staff 23 Posted by Fletcher on 26 Jan, 2014 08:53 PM
These messages mean that you don't have a valid App Store receipt.
You can delete the receipt file mentioned since it isn't valid.
Then install the App Store version, even if it doesn't work.
Then install 2.6.7 and run it.

Thanks for the quick reply, Fletcher.
I did as you said, and the result is the following in the Console:
26.01.14 22:29:46,631 com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[201]: ([0x0-0x68068].com.multimarkdown.composer.mac[2129]) Exited with code: 173
26.01.14 22:29:46,669 storeagent[416]: Unsigned app (/Applications/MultiMarkdown Composer.app).
How can I make an unsigned app run?
Thanks for your help!

If you google OS X and unsigned app, you'll probably find a lot of information.
But generally you can right click and select Open.

Hi Fletcher,
I did google starting an unsigned app, but had no luck. Even if I get the dialog box asking me whether I want to start this the program does not start.
Here is, for the record, the result from Console:
27.01.14 00:25:43,281 com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[190]: ([0x0-0x54054].com.multimarkdown.composer.mac[1290]) Exited with code: 173

27.01.14 00:25:55,422 storeagent[258]: Unsigned app (/Applications/MultiMarkdown Composer.app).
27.01.14 00:26:52,162 com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[190]: (com.multimarkdown.composer.mac.189936[1320]) Exited with code: 173
27.01.14 00:26:52,202 storeagent[258]: Unsigned app (/Applications/MultiMarkdown Composer.app).
27.01.14 00:27:07,631 com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[190]: (com.multimarkdown.composer.mac.189936[1323]) Exited with code: 173
27.01.14 00:27:07,667 storeagent[258]: Unsigned app (/Applications/MultiMarkdown Composer.app).
I even tried to unlock the restrictions in system preferences (no restrictions from Gatekeeper), and it still would not start.
Seems a difficult case...
Best wishes, and thanks for any help you can still think of,
Andreas

This code indicates a valid receipt from the Mac App Store is not available.
1) Just use the MAS version and you don't have to worry about it.
2) Use the links below to locate any receipt files in the MMDC folders, and then try again (make sure to follow the directions in the second link.)
