Inline Footnotes
When typing inline footnotes [^...]
there is some
lag between keystroke and the letter's appearance on the screen.
The lag doesn't seem to be present outside the footnote. I'm using
MMC 2.6.1 (45).

I would say it's due to the 'Autocomplete labels' option in Editing Preferences. Turning it off fixes the lag

Jeremiah,
Thanks for writing in. This is probably related to the autocomplete feature used for references, and internal links.
I can probably improve the performance inside of footnotes which don't need autocompletion.

I am seeing a notable improvement with `Auto Labels` turned off, so far.

This should be better in the next release. If it's not better in your documents, let me know.
Thanks!
