I got 2.5.3 to launch once on 10.9, then it crashed the whole Mac and required a forced reboot. Now, despite re-installing, it will not launch at all. Here's the log output:

1/11/2013 3:01:32.677 pm com.apple.launchd.peruser.502[180]: (com.multimarkdown.composer.mac.115840[2009]) Exited with code: 173

1/11/2013 3:01:32.819 pm storeagent[900]: Unsigned app (/Applications/MultiMarkdown Composer 2/MultiMarkdown Composer.app).

I have Gatekeeper set to allow any app to launch.

That code indicates there is not a valid receipt. Did you run the App Store version after upgrading?

I am using 2.5.3 on 10.9 without any problem.

The truth is I'm not sure which version is the app store version. I haven't used MMDC for a while - I was using version 2.0 in January of this year and it still runs fine. However this version doesn't seem to. I upgraded because I need the Critic Markup support.

    Am I missing something here?

Did you purchase version 2? Or did you purchase version 1, and using the free copy of version 2.0?

The version 1 license from the app store is only valid for version 2.0. Not for any updates after that.

OK, this appears like a stuff up on my part. I think I've got the free version of 2.0.

Is the correct sequence to by the latest app store version of 2 and then 2.5.3 will run?

    Correct.

Buy 2 from the App Store (should be v 2.5.1 (?)). Run it at least once to ensure proper receipt validation.

Then run v 2.5.3 and all should be fine.

BTW -- leave the announcements check enabled, I'm working on some pretty good performance improvements tonight, and hope to release an update in the next day or two.

I suspect you'll be quite pleased with all the improvements if you've been using 2.0 all this time. ;)
