Text formatting commands (Bold, Italic) fail for metadata text at the beginning of a file

In a document that begins with metadata (key-value pairs separated by a colon) selecting text in the metadata area and attempting to apply Bold or Italics formatting from the menu or keyboard shortcut (which would otherwise wrap the selected text in the appropriate markup) does not work. Instead the selection is dropped (or reduced for longer selections), the insertion point (or smaller selection) ends up in the middle of the text, and no markup is applied. This is changed behavior from MMC 3 beta.

There is no bold in metadata per se (it's plain text, not parsed as
Markdown), so there's nothing for Composer to do there. If you want to
put asterisks in, you can. But it's not treated as bold.

The bold/italic commands are more accurate than they used to be in v3.

For example, you can select an entire document (metadata, headers,
tables, code blocks, etc.) and use the Bold command. Only the spans
that can be made bold will be wrapped in asterisks. The other spans
    will be left alone.
