Can't open links to local files (sandboxing?)

When I link to a file, let's say

[file title](/Users/username/Desktop/filename.jpg)

and tries to click that link, I get the following error:

"The application "MultiMarkdown Composer" does not have permission to open "filename.jpg"

I suppose this is a Sandboxing issue but I could only see a post about this for the MMC v. 2, not v. 4.
So I wonder if there's a way around this besides downloading the non-sandboxed version 2...?

Transclusion of Markdown files works flawlessly.

By the way, if I'm using Marked 2 to view this file with that link, that link opens up in Preview as expected.

I'm on the latest MacOS 10.14.5 and on MMC v. 4.5.12 (104).
