<p>There is a wide range of edge cases when you start looking at this. The<br>
algorithm used in CommonMark gets some of them right, and some of them<br>
wrong. The algorithm I use in MMD gets some of them right, and some of<br>
them wrong. The two sets don't align, so you will find some edge cases<br>
work in one parser but not the other.</p>
<p>When MMD tries to work out the proper behavior, it looks to see whether<br>
it is dealing with intra-word or extra-word (but not both.)</p>
<p>In your case, the best approach would be to make your intention clear:</p>
